Habitat for Humanity Makes Home Ownership a Reality

With all of the recent talk about recessions, government bail outs, and layoffs, it’s nice to hear a little good news once in awhile. On Saturday, December 13, six Greensboro, N.C., families moved into their new townhomes, built by Habitat for Humanity. Corporate sponsors for this project included Crown Automotive Management Company, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and Gilbarco Veeder-Root. Habitat is building an additional 13 homes on this property, with work to begin in April 2009.

Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has been building homes for low income families who could otherwise not realize the dream of home ownership. In November 2008, Habitat reached a milestone when it built its 300,000th house in Naples, Florida.

It was recently announced that Thrivent Financial will contribute $24 million in 2009 as part of its 4-year alliance with Habitat for Humanity. This alliance, called Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, has goals to build 314 affordable houses in 37 states next year. Thrivent also has sponsored an additional $1.7 million to focus on constructing 28 new homes in the Gulfport, Miss., area, one of the areas hit by Hurricane Katrina.
